Why using data to understand membership trends is important

first_imgMany credit unions are struggling to retain members and capture the wave of increased credit union membership the industry is experiencing despite paying out a record level of membership dividends, helping members affected by the government shut down earlier this year, maintaining lower rates and fees, and providing stellar member experience.5M new members joined credit unions Y/Y September 2017 to September 2018, but why aren’t consumers flocking to more credit unions in larger numbers? There are nearly 5,000 credit unions with assets of $500M or less, and some think these are the most vulnerable credit unions who may not survive to serve their membership.  Year over year, credit unions with less than $50M in assets (58% of all U.S. credit unions) have reported negative membership growth, while the top 552 credit unions with assets above $500M have experienced strong membership growth. continue reading » 7SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

An Inside Look Into Boxee’s Systematic UX Overhaul Process

first_imgAnyone who has been using Facebook for a few years knows that even minor changes to an interface design can cause a wide variety of reactions from a loyal user base. When the popular social network has made design tweaks in the past, there is always some portion of their users that are upset, if not enraged, by the changes made. A couple of weeks ago, we told you how your registration process could be driving potential users away, and a large part of that has to do with the design. These days, the look and feel of a website or product is just as important as the features that it provides. One product with one of the hottest new interfaces available is the new Boxee Beta software which allows for streamlined local and Web media viewing. Whitney Hess is the user experience (UX) designer behind the framework of the Boxee interface, and recently on her blog Pleasure and Pain she described the systematic process she went through to design it.When Boxee hired Hess to overhaul their UX, she began by interviewing eleven people, some of which were current users of the software, and others who weren’t. She asked them a variety of questions about their use of multimedia, including “Have you ever played music at a party you were hosting?” and “Have you ever displayed your photos on your TV?” among several others. Hess then held usability tests with five participants and gauged how they navigated around the software when asked to complete a series of tasks. Tags:#start#startups From this process, Hess was able to uncover what current users needed to make their experience better while at the same time discovering what potential users would find attractive. Her work led to the inclusion of several UX features and her wireframe submissions certainly influenced the final UI’s look and feel. The screenshot below demonstrates how the final design compared to her wireframe shown above. “Overall, we wanted to provide users with greater ability to discover content across sources, easier ways to sort and ?lter lists, and quick access to their favorite programming,” writes Hess on her blog.Boxee’s set-top product, aptly named the Boxee Box, was one of the most popular new products at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month. One of its most distinguishing characteristics is its beautiful interface design, which was raved about by reviewers on blogs and in the press. The design owes its positive reception to the framework it sits on, a product of Hess’s systematic approach to the redesign.“As more and more living rooms borrow content from the Internet, they’re going to have to borrow the web’s focus on user experience as well,” Andrew Kippen, Boxee’s VP of marketing, told ReadWriteWeb. “Websites rise and fall based not only on the content but also on the experience they provide, soon connected TVs, BluRay players, and Set Top Boxes will do the same.” A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts chris cameron Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Block Sites From Your Google Search Results (No Extension Required)

first_imgAfter a litany of complaints about the declining quality of its search, Google has made a number of changes over the last few weeks to combat the spam in search results. It tweaked its algorithm, for example, and it unveiled a Chrome extension that lets you manually block certain sites from showing up.That functionality will now be available without an extension (provided you’re using versions Chrome 9, IE8 or Firefox 3.5 or higher) as Google is adding a new option to its search that will give you the ability to block domains from appearing in your future search results. You won’t initially see the option to block domains until you’ve clicked through a link in your search results and then hit the “back” button in your browser. Then, right next to the link to “Cached” and “Similar,” you’ll find option to “Block all” results from a domain. Once you’ve blacklisted a domain, you won’t see it in search results, although if it would appear there, you’ll get a message telling you that some results have been blocked. audrey watters A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Google#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting These domains will be connected to your Google Account, so you’ll have the ability to see your list of blocked sites and manage them via your Search Settings.Google says it hopes this will improve search results, and it’s bound to if you’re irritated enough by certain domains to take the time to block them. Google also says that, at this time, it’s not using any information about which sites people choose to block as a signal for search ranking. However Google plans to keep an eye on this data as it looks to improve search results in the future. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Redefining Passivhaus

In January 2012, Katrin Klingenberg, the founder of the Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS), announced that her organization would develop a new passive house standard for North America — a standard that differed from the Passivhaus standard developed in Darmstadt, Germany.Writing in her blog in 2012, Klingenberg explained that “it’s time to allow for a modification process to the rigid annual heating and cooling requirement of less or equal to 15 kWh/m²•yr… for the North American continent’s more extreme climates… This idea that we need to adapt the standard to various regions has taken root around the world from domestic energy experts like Martin Holladay, Alex Wilson, and Marc Rosenbaum and to Passive House groups from other countries, like the Swedes.”Almost two years later, Klingenberg made another announcement: the work required to develop the new standard would be partly funded by U.S. taxpayers (through the Department of Energy), and one of the contracts for the required study would be awarded to the Building Science Corporation of Westford, Massachusetts.A few weeks ago, Klingenberg’s first goal was reached when the DOE-funded paper (“Climate-Specific Passive Building Standards”) was published. The report has three authors: Betsy Pettit (from Building Science Corporation), Graham Wright (from PHIUS), and Katrin Klingenberg. In effect, the paper is a draft for a proposed new passive house standard. PHIUS is now inviting the public to comment on the draft standard; after the public comments are reviewed, the standard may be modified before being adopted by PHIUS.A few years ago, PHIUS cut the umbilical cord linking it to Germany. Since then, the U.S. organization has no longer been bound by the German definition of a “Passivhaus.” Because if its recent independence, PHIUS now has a chance to ask an important question: what, exactly, do… center_img This article is only available to GBA Prime Memberslast_img read more

How to Break a Script Down Into a Shot List

first_imgThe primary purpose of the shot list is to help break down the scene into specific steps which will serve as a blueprint — and safety net — to your day of production. There are hundreds of shot list templates you can download for Microsoft Word and Excel. I find the shot list included in the video below (via Delta Film Academy) to be incredibly detailed and helpful. It goes so far as including the length of the shot on the script page, and the predicted setup time for that shot. It’s ideal for efficiently planning shots. For further reading on the language of the script, I highly recommend the above-mentioned book Script Supervising and Film Continuity by Pat P. Miller. Although the primary purpose of the book is to study the craft of script supervising, it also breaks down a lot of other aspects such as the shooting schedule, how to break down a script, and so on.Do you have any specific shot list templates you always use? Let us know in the comments. There are a few different ways to create a shot list, but what matters most is that you take the time to do it. Here’s one tested method to try next time you break a script down into a shot list.Top image via Delta Film AcademyFilmmaking procedures will often change from production to production, studio to studio, and from region to region. There isn’t just one way to do something or one word to describe that particular function. Regarding shot lists, I’m sure you could find several different ways to create one.In the book Script Supervising and Film Continuity, author Pat P. Miller, explains expertly explains the formal process. Yet even Miller says “You may design any format that serves your purpose, so long as the following information is properly recorded…”Essentially, as long as your production crew is familiar with your format, you’re good to start shooting. First, you need to break down the shots on your script page. In the example piece above, I’m going to breakdown and visualize the information into different shots. As seen below, you do this with a line which is closed off at the top and the bottom top to signify the end of that shot. When you do this in your script, it’s best to use a pencil — if you use a pen and change your mind halfway down the page, your script will get messy.center_img In the marked page above, I have four different lines, each representing a different shot. You may notice that some lines overlap one another, such as shot 2) and shot 2a). This conveys a few things:Shot 2) is longer than shot 2a).Because the length of 2a) is just a single line, all that’s to be filmed is the information ahead of the marking — turning the radio on.In the edit, we would like shot 2a) to play out and then return back to shot 2).There is a common misconception that the first shot in a scene is called by the scene number and then the letter a. For example, 2a). This is incorrect. The first shot of a brand new scene is just the scene number on its own — 2). Every proceeding change (lens change, camera position, frame rate change) after the initial shot is when you add a letter. As a side tip: You can also put a wiggly line next to the character who is speaking but isn’t on camera. This is really more something a script supervisor would do for the editor, but if it’s going to help you distinguish who the camera is on when it comes to typing up your shot list, then use it to your advantage. You need to do this with your entire script. After all that is complete, start to implement this information into a more comprehensive and cleaner shot list. It’s really up to you how involved you want your shot list to be. It’s going to depend on the size of your production and budget level. Below is a basic shot list that I’ve put together from all the information outlined above.last_img read more

Warriors Take on WA State Championships

first_imgaustouch.com.au caught up with East Arnhem Land’s Cameron Adams, who has been responsible for getting the team together and getting them to the event. How long did it take you to get here and what did you have to do to get here?We had to travel from Ramingining to Darwin, which in the end ended up taking us 10 hours, because we had a few flat tyres and a few problems. The road was deemed impassable so we weren’t supposed to drive it, but we drove it. We passed most of the big rivers and we got to one big river before we hit the bitumen and I actually sunk my car in the river so it wasn’t very fun. Fortunately the car didn’t stop and the boys were able to push it out and we just opened the doors and flush the water out and keep driving. That was a bit of an adventure. We spent two nights in Darwin, and we just literally arrived off the plane and drove straight to the game (before their first game). A lot of them had never been on a big plane before and their plane landed and it didn’t land properly and so it took off again so that was another experience. It has been an adventure to get here but the boys were really excited and it’s going to be a great tournament. You had problems getting to the Northern Territory State Championships earlier this year as well, it was quite an effort to get there too wasn’t it?That was probably not as bad as this one, but that was pretty shocking as well, with all the roads and catching boats and crocodile infested waters. What made you want to come to the event? What was the background behind that?I’m from Perth and I’ve been out in Ramingining, East Arnhem Land, for 18 months now and I’ve played Touch here for a long time, represented Western Australia and the Barbarians and I just wanted to come down and bring the boys and give them a bit of exposure to what my life is like after sharing theirs and exposure to life outside Ramingining. Is this a similar team to the one that played at the NT State Championships? We’ve changed about four players. They’ve just improved but a lot of them had never played before May and this is the first time they’ve played. How good is it for them to get this exposure? It’s good, they love it, they are all smiling. They’re excited. When you moved to the Northern Territory, how did you get these players involved? It’s just in my nature to want to play Touch so I just got them together to give them an opportunity to play something other than AFL, that’s kind of like the only sport out there, so it was a chance to play something different. What was the reception like? Did you get people onboard straight away?As soon as you tell them that there was a possibility of going to Darwin, any opportunity to get to Darwin, they are up for it. They were pretty much committed from day one. The Western Australia trip, we got commitment three months ago and we’ve been training three nights a week since then. How good is it just to see them here? It’s amazing, it’s good for the competition, as you can see they’re having a few jokes and mucking around, and there are going to be a lot of teams that turn their heads and have a good look at them and that’s what it’s all about, encouraging more people to come. How exciting is it for you to come back and play at this event?I love it, especially playing my old club straight up, they are my very best friends, Tompkins Park, and to play them first, I spoke to one of my mates the other day and said that it couldn’t have happened any better. We are happy and as long as we keep improving, it doesn’t matter about winning it’s about getting better and maybe having the opportunity to come back next year. How proud of them are you?100 per cent, I love them, they’ve got an amazing sense of humour, they really have become my close mates and they all call me their family, I’ve actually been adopted by them, if you ask each and every one of them I’m related to them somehow. That’s what it’s all about, it’s just one big family.
