CDC study estimates 20-fold increase in Zika birth defects

first_imgZika The proportion of Zika-affected pregnancies with birth defects is approximately 20-fold higher compared with the proportion of pregnancies seen in 2013-2014, which is before Zika was introduced into the Americas, according to an article published Thursday, March 3 in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.  The types of birth defects—including brain abnormalities and/or microcephaly, neural tube defects and other early brain malformations, eye defects, and other central nervous system (CNS) problems—were seen in about 3 of every 1,000 births in 2013-2014. In 2016, the proportion of infants with these same types of birth defects born to women with Zika virus infection during pregnancy was about 6% or nearly 60 of every 1,000 completed pregnancies with Zika infections. The researchers analyzed 2013-2014 data from three birth defects surveillance programs in the United States (Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Georgia) to provide the baseline frequency for Zika-related birth defects. To assess the effect of Zika virus infection during pregnancy, the scientists compared that 2013-2014 baseline number with previously published numbers among pregnancies with Zika virus infection from the US Zika Pregnancy Registry (USZPR) from 2016.They identified 747 infants and fetuses with one or more of these defects from programs in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Georgia, from 2013-2014. Brain abnormalities and/or microcephaly were the most frequent conditions reported.  Data from the USZPR identified 26 infants and fetuses with these same birth defects among the 442 completed pregnancies of women with possible Zika infection from January through September 2016. These findings demonstrate the importance of having monitoring systems that collect data on birth defects.CDC supports state, territorial, tribal and local health departments to establish or enhance surveillance systems that rapidly collect information about birth defects that have been observed with Zika virus infection during pregnancy. Today, five additional jurisdictions—Arkansas, Nebraska, Nevada, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands— were awarded funding, bringing the total to 50 jurisdictions and more than $27 million in support of birth defects surveillance for fiscal years 2016 and 2017.CDC continues to recommend that pregnant women not travel to areas with Zika. If a pregnant woman must travel to or lives in an area with Zika, she should talk with her healthcare provider and strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites and sexual transmission of Zika virus. Pregnant women with possible exposure to Zika virus should be tested for Zika infection even if they do not have symptomslast_img read more

Haitian Diaspora Group Wants Urgent End to Political Crisis

first_imgEVANSTON, Illinois (CMC) – A broad coalition of Haitian groups in the Haitian Diaspora wants an urgent resolution of the current political crisis in the country, saying that Haiti has “crumbled under the weight of this acute crisis”.The group known as the United Front of the Haitian Diaspora (UFHD), based in Evanston, Illinois, claimed in an emailed resolution to nationals on Sunday that “anarchy and stagnation prevail everywhere”.“President (Jovenel) Moise and his administration can no longer resolve the crisis without radical changes,” said UFHD, stating that its mission is “to mobilise Haitians living in the Diaspora, our children, our friends and allies to help Haiti develop”.“So, as much as we are constitutionalists, we think that the president has to come to term with that reality and be compassionate, and make his contribution to stability and end the carnage,” it added.UFHD claimed that Moise does not have the capacity to maintain a stable government to manage the affairs of the nation in the best interests of citizens for more than a year, adding that “that such a situation has led him to the successive nomination of prime ministers but yet powerless to obtain ratification at the level of Parliament, in spite of the fact that he has had a clear majority.”It also said that Moise has been incapable of addressing the root causes of the nation’s deteriorating social-political crisis and its acute economic collapse, and is “powerlessness of bringing together divergent forces within the society to find solutions in spite of his attempt to create various commissions that bore no results, such as the Etat Generaux, the Commission de Consultation, etc, and others.”UFHD noted that, since July 2018, there have been intensive demonstrations against the government to protest rising costs of living, taxes on fuel, “rampant or blatant corruption gone unpunished (the Petro Caribe dossier), and accusations of corruption levelled against the president and his entourage.”The group said such demonstrations and failure to address their roots causes have resulted into significant loss of lives, properties, and trade and business opportunities, and disruption of basic services, including access to schools by children. In addition to the failure of the executive branch, UFHD said the Legislature (Chamber of Deputies and the Senate) has shown its “inability to perform its basic functions,” including passing the budget, enacting legislation, voting to amend the constitution to achieve significant changes and sanctioning members for illegal acts.UFHD said the judiciary has also been “disappointing” for its failure to pursue corrupt members of the executive branch and representatives of the civil society accused of corruption or misappropriation of funds.Given that “a large majority of the population demands the unconditional resignation of the president,” among other things, the coalition proposed a consultative process, in the very short term, “aimed at coordinating our efforts with those of other movements with similar views as our own.”UFHD said the consultation will be aimed at reaching points of agreement on initiatives to address the current situation, to formulate a specific set of proposals and to inform the entire population about such immediate proposal to resolve the crisis. The group also called for the establishment of an Emergency Representative Management Council (Representative Council) composed of personalities and, in observance of the spirit of the constitution, headed by a reputable member of the Court of Cassation.UFHD said this council must include representatives from key sectors of the population, both inside and outside the country, who will take charge of administering the transition. In this transition, UFHD said President Moise must transfer power to the Council peacefully “and have the opportunity to legally respond to charges against him.”UFHD also wants the Acting Prime Minister to resign from his post “in order to allow a new, acting, appropriate Interim Prime Minister to manage the day-to-day affairs of the country in collaboration with the Representative Council.”In addition, the group wants the new Interim Prime Minister, in consultation with the Representative Council, to establish a Permanent Electoral Council (CEP) that will include members of the Diaspora.last_img read more

Alex Capurro: Easy Payment Gateway – Revising alternative payment options for US conundrums

first_img SBC Webinars presents Xtremepush – Taming Strange Animals… Profiling & Engaging U.S. Sports Consumers April 2, 2020 Related Articles StumbleUpon Submit DraftKings expands Sportradar partnership to launch mobile live streaming May 29, 2020 Share Share Join the PASPA Repeal 2nd anniversary online networking event May 13, 2020 Alex Capurro – Easy Payment GatewayAlex Capurro, CEO of Easy Payment Gateway, says US gambling operators must look to alternative options to deliver a seamless payments journey for consumers.___________Following the repeal of PASPA last month, and the growing number of US states pushing ahead with legal, regulated online gambling, the USA has quickly become one of the hottest emerging markets in the world. From sports betting to casino and poker, the potential is certainly there for operators from both sides of the pond to cash in. Most have already thrashed out their battle plans, including key aspects such as platform, games and marketing. But one area that requires particular attention is payments. It has the potential to cause serious headaches for those that are unaware of the challenges they will face;  New Jersey is an example of just how growth-prohibitive payments issues can be. Payment Declined: The main challenge, of course, is that the major card issuers – Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, etc – do not permit transactions initiated by gambling operators, regardless of whether they are a land-based or online operation. With a traditional payments gateway, operators are assigned a merchant category code from Visa and MasterCard that identifies the type of business they are – for sportsbook, casino and poker operators it is usually 7801. When a deposit is made, this code is run through a list of prohibited codes and if there is a match, the transaction is declined. This has hit New Jersey operators hard – debit and credit cards are among the most popular and trusted payment methods in most markets but only a fraction are getting through in the Garden State. Alternative Options: The obvious answer is to offer consumers alternative methods of depositing and withdrawing. In mature markets it is often the case that players have a range of payment options, from eWallets to pre-paid cards via bank transfers and even cryptocurrencies. When it comes to eWallets, Skrill and Neteller are among the most popular with consumers. They are easy to use, and offer rapid transaction times whether depositing or withdrawing. In addition, they super simple to integrate into platforms and payment gateways. Another option is a pre-paid voucher such as Paysafecard. Users purchase the voucher with cash or via a debit/credit card; the voucher contains a pin code that is then entered via the operator’s payment gateway – the value of the voucher is then credited to their account. The issue, however, is that consumers – especially in markets where online gambling is new or has only just been regulated – often lack trust in these alternative payment methods. And this is certainly true when it comes to them being used to crediting online gambling accounts. Close the Loop & Build Trust:  The solution is to offer a pre-paid card to consumers. Some payment merchants provide their clients (online gambling operators) with a customised pre-paid card solution that their players can use to deposit into their online wagering account. These branded cards deliver a customised and closed-loop payment experience that facilitates both deposits and withdrawals. They also help provide a 360-degree experience to customers; the cards can be used in the land-based casino and online, and for purchasing food, drinks, etc as well as withdrawing winnings from their wagering wallet. Of course, operators will need to advertise pre-paid solutions to their players, and even offer incentives for using them such as cashback and bonuses. It’s worth the outlay, however, as pre-paid cards are the most effective way of engaging new online players and building trust. Change Takes Time: Given the scale and scope of the US market when it comes to sports betting and online gambling, it is only a matter of time before the major card issuers begin accepting transactions from gambling companies. To expedite this procedure, they will want to see states deploy comprehensive regulations that require operators to be compliant with the most stringent rules and requirements when it comes to KYC, anti-money laundering and fraud. This will happen over time, but in the interim operators will have to look to alternative payment options to ensure their players can deposit and withdraw, and that they are offered a seamless payments journey._______________Alex Capurro –  CEO – Easy Payment Gatewaylast_img read more
