Aldi to increase pay for 5000 UK store assistants

first_imgSupermarket organisation Aldi is to increase its minimum hourly rate of pay for more than 5,000 UK-based store assistants from 1 February 2018.Store assistants working across Aldi’s 762 national sites will earn a minimum of £8.85 an hour from 1 February 2018, while store assistants based in its London shops will receive a minimum wage rate of £10.20 an hour, also effective from 1 February 2018.The new rates of pay will exceed the voluntary living wage rate, which currently stands at £8.75 an hour for employees across the UK. The higher London living wage rate recommended by the Living Wage Foundation is £10.20 an hour, to reflect the increased living costs of residing in the capital.Aldi will additionally continue to pay its employees for breaks.Matthew Barnes (pictured), chief executive officer at Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our store [employees] are the cornerstone of our business. Without their hard work and dedication day in, day out, we would be unable to provide customers with the lowest grocery prices in the UK.”last_img
