overwhelmingly to engrave the Xi Jinping way into their constitution Xi Jinping at the 19th National Congress of the CPC Reuters "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" adds a new section to the already-weighty party tome and puts the 64-year-old Chinese president in distinguished company Only two other men—Communist China’s founder Mao Zedong and the architect of market reforms Deng Xiaoping—have previously been granted such an honour Here are some things to know about the move What does it mean China has a state constitution which governs how the country is run but the Communist Party that has ruled the world’s most populous nation since 1949 has its own charter for its 89 million members With Xi’s name newly inked in the party constitution disputes can be crushed and rivals can be parried with a swift look at the rulebook "It means his authority has been recognised by the entire party" said Chinese political scholar Hu Xingdou Not only that but the way Xi thinks will seep through the collective political conscious: All the way down to the youngest members of society Officials have plans to cement Xi Thought into hearts and minds across China with the country’s education minister telling reporters that it would be incorporated into school curriculums "(The thought will) go into textbooks into classes and into the brains (of students)" Chen Baosheng said according to the South China Morning Post What thoughts exactly Xi sketched the outlines of his philosophy in a mammoth opening address spanning three and a half hours last Wednesday although he has been incorporating his principles into CCP rhetoric for years Broad brushstrokes include banner notions such as a "moderately prosperous society" and the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" "The principal contradiction facing Chinese society in the new era" Xi said in his speech "Is that between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life" For a party that came into power promising a radical redistribution of the nation’s wealth success on this front is crucial for credibility Shortly after taking office in 2012 Xi also popularised the notion of a "Chinese Dream" the comprehensive realisation of a modernised party and nation united under socialism with Chinese characteristics Now that dream has been defined as one for the "new era": An era with Xi at its helm How did it go down In the highly-choreographed world of Communist Party Congress Xi’s wisdom was tremendously well received Mentions of "Xi Thought" (the philosophy’s state-approved shorthand) echoed through Beijing’s Great Hall of the People during the week-long congress "We have entered the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics with general secretary Xi Jinping as the core" Yang Baofeng a delegate from northeast Heilongjiang province told AFP Tuesday Li Hualiang a village party branch secretary in northeast Jilin province called the ideology a "very great formulation and innovation" "There were absolutely no dissenting opinions This is normal" he said "Now our country is unified cohesive and moving up in the world" Meanwhile state media has trumpeted the proliferation of the philosophy "Xi’s speech hailed as inspirational thought-provoking" said one headline from the official Xinhua news agency How does it stack up against the others With a title more than double the length of the other constitutionally-approved philosophies—Marxism-Leninism Mao Zedong Thought Deng Xiaoping Theory—the addition of Xi to the charter solidifies his place as a Chinese leader that history will reckon with Mao is the only other figure in Chinese history to have been honoured in this way while he was still alive triggering speculation that Xi will hang onto power well beyond the standard two terms after his second mandate ends in 2022 Xi’s predecessors Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao had concepts included in the constitution but without their names and then only when they shuffled off into retirement: The Communist Party equivalent of a testimonial football match By: Reuters | Wellington | Updated: July 7 2016 2:45 pm New Zealand’s cricket team led by Kane Williamson will leave for their tour of Africa next Monday (Source: AP) Top News New Zealand’s cricket team will leave for their tour of Africa as scheduled next Monday despite unrest in Zimbabwe though they will monitor the situation before deciding whether to continue into the country for two tests a spokesman said on Thursday Zimbabwe’s capital Harare ground to a halt on Wednesday as people stayed at home while foreign banks and most businesses shut down in one of the biggest protests against high unemployment an acute cash shortage and corruption for nearly a decade Wednesday’s protest followed violent clashes between taxi drivers and police on Monday that led to the arrest of 95 people It also coincided with a strike by doctors teachers and nurses whose salaries had been delayed “We are continuing to monitor the situation” a New Zealand Cricket spokesman told Reuters “There is a bit of time and water to go under the bridge … and at this stage its business as usual” The team have scheduled a nine-day training camp in Pretoria before they travel to Zimbabwe for the first of two tests at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo The first match starts on July 29 with the second test beginning on Aug 6 NZC said the camp would also give them time to monitor developments in Zimbabwe New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade debating the ideal composition of the Indian teamthe effect of possible early summer conditions in England dominated conversation The picture being painted was one of grassyeven damp pitchesthe ball was expected to swing and seam a great deal andwith good reasonthere was concern over Indias batting which was expected to be flamboyant but not quite resilient enough With two new ballswe thought it would swing throughout the innings and that old-fashioned test match batting would be the way to go We are halfway into the league phase as I write this and while teams have preferred to bat like in test cricket for a major part and like in T20 thereafterand while it has been cloudy and coldeverything else has been quite contrary to expectations The pitches have been drythe ball isnt exactly nipping away in all directions and teams are checking out their spin bowling options A traditional swing and seam country like New Zealand is using three spinners to deliver half their overs and even South Africa haveafter initial hesitationresorted to PhangisoPeterson and Duminy And the new ball hasnt swung From release to batsmanit has produced straight lines not wicked arcs like you think you might see in England Add the two factors and you can see why Indias batsmen have enjoyed themselves so far IndeedIndias refreshingly stroke filled approach has been one of two talking points with Englands ability to reverse the ball rather early being the other Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have batted with freedomthey have hit on the risethey have hit in the air and they have used their feet delightfully And they havent been alone In doing so they have re-ignited the debate about whether the IPL is scaling up batsmanship in the 50 over game or diminishing generally accepted skills While in Indiait has become fashionable to look upon the IPL as a cauldron of evilthere has been relatively lesser debate on the impact it has had on the playing of the game I suspect batsmanship is undergoing a change in respect to what is considered risky and what no longer is Where classical batsmanshipas embodied by the English top three of CookBell and Trottwould nudge the ballplace it in the gapscontinue to put a price on a wicketIndias batsmen are happy to hit through the linesearch for boundaries even after the power play overs are gone and hit the ball in the air quite consistently I think it is likely that T20 is showing that the risk associated with certain shots was over-estimatedthat hitting over cover for examplemay actually be a percentage shot if the surface is conducive The IPL may have become a laboratory for testing out new shotscertainly it seems AB de Villiers has used it that waybut it is not alone because two outstanding young players havent been part of it and that leads me to think it is a more global trend Just before the Champions Trophy began Martin Guptill produced two stroke filled hundreds and his shotmaking in his 189 at Southampton wasby all accountsbreathtaking And young Joss Butlereven if currently batting down the orderis showing the way for a new generation of English batsmen It seems there is a fresh air blowing across the cricket world and we must respect it The other interesting cricketing issue is the ability of the England bowlers to get the ball to reverse swing so early in the game against Australiaand indeed in the last one day game against New Zealand Nowreverse swing has always been looked at with a lot of suspicionlike the black sheep in the familyand so every time it pops up when it isnt expected totongues start wagging And so there is a conspiracy theorythe presence of a particular player for examplebut also an interesting cricketing aspect Against AustraliaEnglands bowlers bowled a lot of deliveries cross-seam It could be because word is that this batch of white Kookaburra balls isnt swinging at all and so roughing up one side becomes more important It would require the bowlers to land the ball consistently on the same side because the two halves have to become dissimilar If that is indeed the casewe are seeing another very interesting developmentone that could play a major role in the Ashes later this year For these two reasons alonethis has been an excellent tournament so far And I wont be surprised at all if it isnt the last of its kind For all the latest Opinion News download Indian
