Heaven retains JCA presidency

first_imgProminent business executive, Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven, has been re-elected as president of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA).The CHASE Fund chief executive officer will head the association for a second two-year term, after turning back the challenge of incumbent secretary, Fritz Harris, 52 to 47, during the association’s annual general meeting at the Jamaica Conference Centre yesterday.”It feels good to be returned as president, as over the past two years, the JCA has made several strides,” said Heaven.”It is a good victory for cricket, I believe, as the association is moving in the right direction generally, and the hope is that over the next term things will get even better.”Harris, who prior to the election had served as secretary for the past two years, expressed disappointment at the result, but, in the meantime, congratulated Heaven.HARRIS DISAPPOINTED”I am naturally disappointed with the result, but it’s a membership association with the right to elect the president, and I have to respect that,” Harris said. “I must also commend the president on retaining his position.”Heaven, who prior to his ascension to the post two years ago, had promised to serve for two terms, will also have at least six of his seven executive committee nominees to work with. This is after the they won their respective contests. These include: Dr Donovan Bennett (first vice-president), Mark Neita (second vice-president), Diann Campbell (honorary secretary, Clinton Clarke (assistant secretary) and Hopeton Morrison (treasurer). At press time, the seventh executive position, that of assistant treasurer, was undecided.Kerry Scott, representing Team Heaven, and Errol Moodie, representing Team Harris, were the assistant treasurer nominees.Heaven, during his campaign, noted that several measures had been instituted during his tenure. These, he said, included: the enhancement of commitment to transparency and good governance by the filing of the first annual income tax returns in 16 years, the appointment of a chief executive officer, the implementation of lights at Sabina Park, and improvement practice facilities as well as provision of a new gymnasium and wellness centre. He also pointed to the restoration of local women’s cricket competition to the cricket calendar.Harris, in the meanwhile, a director of the JCA for over 15 years, had campaigned on a promise of change for a betterment of the game.last_img read more

DONEGAL WIND FARM CAMPAIGNERS JOIN NEW NATIONAL LOBBY GROUP

first_imgFor the first time groups from all over Ireland including Co Donegal will be gathering to address the growing unease in communities around the expansion of wind farms across the country. It is proposed that a new organisation be formed which will be called the Campaign for Responsible Engagement with Wind Energy (CREWE).Fifteen community groups from as far away as Donegal and Cork will attend the first National Meeting in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon on the 16th June. One of the organisers of the national gathering, Yvonne Cronin, said that for some time local communities have been concerned about “the lack of informed debate” around proposed wind energy developments. The main concerns include the current wind energy guidelines which allow wind turbines taller than the Dublin Spire to be built only 500 metres from family homes. The new grouping say a recent editorial in the British Medical Journal “clearly highlights the health implications associated with the noise of wind turbines for people who live close by.”Said Yvonne: “Other concerns include the impact on our tourist landscapes and the lack of proper economic costing regarding wind energy. Prominent economist Colm McCarthy has predicted a potential ‘NAMA’ for wind farms and many people fear that wind turbines will go the same route as the empty housing estates which litter rural Ireland.” Ms. Cronin said that communities were also concerned about “the lack of meaningful engagement” with local residents in the pre-planning stage of wind farm development. The meeting will be opened by Senator John Kelly from Co. Roscommon. Senator Kelly has introduced the Wind Turbine Bill 2012 to the Seanad. The Bill has been introduced to define minimum distances of turbines from family homes according to the height of wind turbines. If this legislation is passed it would mean that the current generation of large wind turbines will have to be 1.5 kms from family homes.Other speakers include Val Martin, Irish representative of the European Platform Against Wind Farms (www.epaw.org). Val has researched extensively the engineering and economic value of wind energy. His presentation will be followed by a talk by Peter Crossan who is a spokesperson for a group that assists communities impacted by wind farm development.Peter has a strong interest in planning and environmental matters associated with wind farms.

Professor Alun Evans from Queen’s University Belfast will be the final speaker. Professor Evans co-wrote the March 2012 editorial of the peer reviewed British Medical Journal which describes research concerning the health concerns of living near wind turbines and concludes that the evidence points towards adverse health impacts. The National meeting is to occur at the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon at 2pm Saturday 16th June. A closed meeting to discuss the operation of the national organisation will occur at 4pm.* Anyone interested in attending the meeting are welcome. Bought for tinkerbell dress up, looked very good. Good quality and excellent colour went well with my halloween costume. A bit disappointed with this wig – the fringe is great. A bit disappointed with this wig – the fringe is great, but there’s a strange layering with the slightly longer purple bits round the front and the curls are very different than pictured. Mostly disappointed because i can’t get it to stay on my head – even with a wig cap on it keeps popping off after just a few minutes. Love this wig, it totally represents my personality haha. Not sure if it is the same as the picture but still a good wig and i am happy with my purchase. The wig came reasonably quick, i was worried as i had brought this as part of a halloween costume and luckily it came before then. The only problem i have with this product is that the top of the wig is really thick, yet at the bottom its quite thin, not sure if it is the same as the picture but still a good wig and i am happy with my purchase. An Inside Look Into Boxee’s Systematic UX Overhaul Process

first_imgAnyone who has been using Facebook for a few years knows that even minor changes to an interface design can cause a wide variety of reactions from a loyal user base. When the popular social network has made design tweaks in the past, there is always some portion of their users that are upset, if not enraged, by the changes made. A couple of weeks ago, we told you how your registration process could be driving potential users away, and a large part of that has to do with the design. These days, the look and feel of a website or product is just as important as the features that it provides. One product with one of the hottest new interfaces available is the new Boxee Beta software which allows for streamlined local and Web media viewing. Whitney Hess is the user experience (UX) designer behind the framework of the Boxee interface, and recently on her blog Pleasure and Pain she described the systematic process she went through to design it.When Boxee hired Hess to overhaul their UX, she began by interviewing eleven people, some of which were current users of the software, and others who weren’t. She asked them a variety of questions about their use of multimedia, including “Have you ever played music at a party you were hosting?” and “Have you ever displayed your photos on your TV?” among several others. Hess then held usability tests with five participants and gauged how they navigated around the software when asked to complete a series of tasks. Tags:#start#startups From this process, Hess was able to uncover what current users needed to make their experience better while at the same time discovering what potential users would find attractive. Her work led to the inclusion of several UX features and her wireframe submissions certainly influenced the final UI’s look and feel. The screenshot below demonstrates how the final design compared to her wireframe shown above. “Overall, we wanted to provide users with greater ability to discover content across sources, easier ways to sort and ?lter lists, and quick access to their favorite programming,” writes Hess on her blog.Boxee’s set-top product, aptly named the Boxee Box, was one of the most popular new products at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month. One of its most distinguishing characteristics is its beautiful interface design, which was raved about by reviewers on blogs and in the press. The design owes its positive reception to the framework it sits on, a product of Hess’s systematic approach to the redesign.“As more and more living rooms borrow content from the Internet, they’re going to have to borrow the web’s focus on user experience as well,” Andrew Kippen, Boxee’s VP of marketing, told ReadWriteWeb. “Websites rise and fall based not only on the content but also on the experience they provide, soon connected TVs, BluRay players, and Set Top Boxes will do the same.” A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts chris cameron Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Europe’s 17 Golden Rules for Keeping Safe on Social Networks

first_imgAre you using your real name on your social network profiles? According to the European Union’s Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA), that’s a big mistake. A new report, published to coincide with Europe’s Safer Internet Day, details the dangers of using social networks and lays out 17 “golden rules” for keeping safe on social networks. The report’s authors are especially worried about the proliferation of mobile social networks and, among other things, recommend that users turn off all location-based services whenever they are not absolutely needed. The report argues that you should always protect your social networking accounts by using a pseudonym. After all, the authors say, your real friends will know who is hiding behind your nickname and will still be able to find you easily. We are not quite sure if this is a very realistic proposition, though some of the ENISA’s “Golden Rules” are quite reasonable.17 Golden RulesHere are the rules:Pay Attention to What You Post and Upload:Consider carefully which images, videos and information you choose to publishNever post sensitive informationUse a pseudonymChoose Your Friends with Care:Do not accept friend requests from people you do not knowVerify all your contactsProtect Your Work Environment and Avoid Reputation Risk:When joining a social networking site use your personal e-mail address (not your company e-maill address)Be careful how you portray your company or organization onlineDo not mix your business contacts with your friend contactsDo not let anyone see your profile or personal information without your consentDo not leave your mobile phone unattendedDo not save your password on your mobile phoneUse the security features available on your mobile phoneProtect Your Mobile Phone and the Information Saved on It:Be careful what you publish about someone elseInform Yourself:Read carefully and in full the privacy policy and the condition and terms of use of the social network you chooseProtect Your Privacy With the Privacy Settings:Use privacy-oriented settings (check who can see your pictures, who can contact you and who can add comments)Report Stolen Phones Immediately:Be careful when using your mobile phone and pay attention to where you put itPay Attention to Location Based Services and Information of Your Mobile Phone:Deactivate location based services when not using themWhat do You Think? Most of these rules seem quite reasonable, but are you really going to use a nickname for your social network profile?
