HBO Trying to decide what to watch next? Netflix has algorithms for that, but HBO is trying a different approach: wetware. The channel’s new Recommended by Humans page offers real opinions from real people — and the chance to stream some 50 HBO shows, movies and documentaries for free. It’s super weird. Accessible only in a browser, RBH is a huge scrollable grid of tweets and videos from people gushing about various HBO originals. Once you’ve read or played a recommendation, you can then view the movie — or, if it’s a show, the first episode. But there’s no way to search the listings (good luck trying to find, say, Chernobyl), and if you’re using a mobile device, the videos annoyingly autoplay once you land on one. On desktop, the experience is even worse, because there’s no rhyme or reason to which direction you should click and drag. You feel like you’re in an endless sea of recommendation tiles. What’s the point of all this? HBO would seem to believe that when you read or hear a recommendation from a real person, you’ll give it more weight than you would a computer-generated one. Maybe — but the annoyance factor of bad UI may have the opposite effect.Of course, this first-one’s-free approach is nothing new. HBO hopes you’ll watch the first episode of, say, Barry, Big Little Lies or Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, then decide to subscribe so you can watch more. Here’s the full list of what’s available, followed by a viewing tip:A Black Lady Sketch ShowAnimalsBallersBig Little LiesBored to DeathCarnivaleChernobylCrashingCurb Your EnthusiasmDeadwoodDivorceEastbound & DownEnlightenedEuphoriaFlight of the ConchordsGame of ThronesGentleman JackGirlsGoing Clear: Scientology and the Prison of BeliefLast Week Tonight with John OliverLos EspookysMommy Dead and DearestMy Brilliant FriendRandom Acts of FlynessSally4EverSex and the CitySharp ObjectsSilicon ValleySix Feet UnderSuccessionThe ComebackThe DeuceThe Jinx: The Life and Death of Robert DurstThe Larry Sanders ShowThe LeftoversThe Night OfThe Normal HeartThe SopranosThe WireThe Young PopeThere’s Something Wrong with Aunt DianeTrue BloodTrue DetectiveVeepVice PrincipalsWestworldFound something you like? If it’s an older show, like Deadwood, Flight of the Conchords, Girls or Curb Your Enthusiasm, you might be able to watch some or all of the series as part of your Amazon Prime subscription.I’m all for free stuff, and HBO definitely has some of my favorite shows. I just wish the UI for this thing wasn’t so terrible. This might be Recommended by Humans, but it wasn’t designed for them. HBO
Tiger Woods ended his major title drought with victory at Augusta MastersreutersWhen he won his fifth Masters title and 15th major championship on April 14, Tiger Woods regained his place at the top of the golfing world. This victory ends a drought of 11 years without a major title, a period which saw the 43-year old going through mental and physical travails which left him looking like a spent force. But with this win, there is talk of resurgence and return to his top form.Tiger Woods was synonymous with golf about a decade ago. Even those who didn’t follow the sport knew his name. But then, in 2009, things came apart in a spectacular way when he was revealed to have been involved in several promiscuous relationships outside his marriage. Suddenly, this icon of the sport, seen as a role model, became a target of scorn. This personal disaster led to a complete breakdown in his professional life as well. The man who, at that time, had 14 major titles under his belt and seemed favourite to break Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18, went into a downward spiral. But the vagaries of sport can never be predicted. On Sunday, April 14, Tiger was back on a familiar perch – that of a champion at Augusta Masters. It was here that he announced his arrival as a future great when he secured his first major title at the age of 21. 13 more titles followed until a drought began following 2008 US Open. Tiger Woods reacts to win the Tour Championship golf tournament at East Lake Golf ClubreutersHis success brought the world’s attention back to golf. It is clear that even today, nobody commands as much stardom among golfers as Woods. US President Donald Trump, an avid golfer himself, tweeted praise for the star. “What a fantastic life comeback for a really great guy,” was the tweet from the leader of the country. He was joined by his predecessor Barack Obama who also showered praise on the 43-year old for recovering his form. Now that he is back to his winning ways, talk of him breaking Nicklaus’ record of 18 major titles has revived. Though he may not yet be back to his best – he scored a bogey on the last hole – but this victory can be a new start for the five-time Masters champion. As much as the emotional turmoil, the physical difficulties faced by Woods in the last decade were also of a high order. Serious surgeries on his back had caused considerable difficulties and even threatened to end his career. The fact that he could now compete and win at the highest level suggests that both on the emotional and physical front, Woods is back to his best. Can he follow this triumph with other great victories? Only time with tell.
DU teachers support quota reform, but not attack on VC residenceMembers of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association formed a human chain on the campus on Tuesday, protesting at the attack on Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s official residence. The association held the protest rally at the foot of Aparajeya Bangla of Dhaka University around noon, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers, reports UNB.However, the teachers of Dhaka University extended their moral support to the demand for quota reform.Dramatist Ramendu Majumdar, who too joined the human chain, said the students’ demand to reform the quota system is logical but the attack on the VC’s house is totally unwanted. The attack was pre-planned, he claimed. The DUTA leaders observed that university students are not behind the attack and the attack was carried out as part of a plot.Sadeka Halim, dean of the Social Sciences faculty, urged the authorities concerned to bring the attackers to book. The association also announced programme to wear black badges from 11am to 11:59am on 12 April suspending their academic activities including classes. The DUTA leaders invited journalists to come to the VC’s residence on Wednesday around 11:00am as they would show the video footage of the attack. The teachers assured the agitating students that they will request the prime minister top bring logical reform in the quota system. However, a section of general students continued their silent protest over the law enforcers’ attack on the agitating students, carrying placards, in front of the DUTA human chain.Different slogans including “Why were attacks in the campus”, “Why were students injured?”, “Teachers (our guardians), we want answer”, were written in the placards.Amid demonstrations in Shahbagh and adjacent areas early Monday seeking reform in the quota system, some unknown attackers entered the VC’s residence breaking its main gate and ransacked several rooms and furniture. The attackers also set fire on two vehicles parked inside the VC’s residence.

Imran KhanA Pakistani victim of the Christchurch attack who apparently tried to tackle the gunman before being shot dead will be awarded posthumously in his home country for his courage, prime minister Imran Khan said Sunday.Khan spoke as the Pakistani foreign office confirmed that nine of its citizens had been killed in the mass shootings at two mosques in the New Zealand city which claimed the lives of 50 people Friday, including many who had emigrated from around the world.Video of the massacre shows one man gunned down as he approaches the shooter, while others flee. The man is believed to be Naeem Rashid, although his face is blurred in the footage and he has yet to be formally identified.”Pakistan is proud of Mian Naeem Rashid who was martyred trying to tackle the White Supremacist terrorist & his courage will be recognised with a national award,” Khan tweeted on Sunday.Pakistan has several awards to recognise civilian bravery, and Khan did not specify which one would be awarded to Rashid, whose son also died in the massacre.Rashid’s elder brother Khurshid Alam told AFP in the northwestern Pakistani city of Abbottabad that the award “means a lot” to his family.”I feel very proud,” he said, calling the loss of his brother and nephew a “big, big shock”.Naeem, he said, had visited the family last year, staying for two months.”We had a lovely time. He was a man who would be like a kid with children, and like an adult with grown-ups,” Alam said.- Suspect visited Pakistan -‘Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the award would be given on 23 March, Pakistan Day.He confirmed that nine Pakistani citizens had been killed in the attack while one was in critical condition. One “is still not out of danger but he is being treated”, he told reporters in Islamabad without identifying the victim.Qureshi said families of six of the victims have decided to bury them in Christchurch, while the other three want to bring the remains to Pakistan.”Whatever the families will decide, we will respect it and fulfil their wishes,” he said, adding that flags will be flown at half-mast in Pakistan on Monday in honour of the victims.Officials in Pakistan’s picturesque northern areas also confirmed that the main suspect, 28-year-old white supremacist Brenton Tarrant, had visited the region as a tourist in October, staying for more than a week.Syed Israr Hussain, owner of Osho Thang Hotel in Minapin Nagar, told AFP: “(Tarrant) … stayed for two days before leaving for Khunjerab (Pass, on the border with China).”He was a decent and quiet guy.”He said he remembered Tarrant among the many tourists who visit the region “because he was so impressed by the area, and said he had heard so many negative things about Pakistan but he found it the opposite”.Tarrant’s alleged involvement in the massacre left him “surprised and shocked”, he said.Tarrant is also believed to have visited Gilgit and Skardu in the mountainous north.
