Wenger v Mourinho — origins of a blood feud

first_imgThe acrimony between Wenger and Mourinho stretches back to the arrival of the Portuguese coach in England 13 years ago.Verbal volleys have been traded time and again, with the enmity once boiling over into a memorable mid-match bout of shoving.Even now, with Wenger 68, and Mourinho 54, neither boss seems ready to act their age.Why do the old foes hate each other so much? Here AFP Sports looks back at the roots of the rivalry and recalls some of their more spectacular battles:Wenger labelled a “voyeur”When Mourinho joined Chelsea in 2004, his brash personality didn’t take long to ruffle Wenger, who as one of the game’s established force, didn’t take kindly to being threatened by the young upstart. While Mourinho adopted a deferential attitude around Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson, there would be no such respect shown to Wenger. When Wenger took a shot at Chelsea by claiming they might have lost belief after a couple of poor results in 2005-06 season, Mourinho went on the offensive with a memorable, if unkind, description of the Arsenal manager.“I think he is one of these people who is a voyeur. He likes to watch other people,” he said.“There are some guys who, when they are at home, they have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. He speaks and speaks and speaks about Chelsea.”Style warsThe saying goes that opposites attract, but the contrast between the urbane Wenger and the spiky Mourinho couldn’t be more obvious and neither has been willing to end the cold war.The differences between the rivals’ approach to their careers are striking.Former Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Porto coach Mourinho has never lasted more than three years anywhere, while Wenger is in the 21st year of his Arsenal reign.Wenger took a holistic approach to his root and branch rebuild of Arsenal and has produced some of the most eye-catching teams in English football history, but when results suffered his stubborn refusal to tinker with his purist principles was costly.Mourinho prefers to shock and awe, hammering away at perceived threats both inside and outside his clubs until they bend to his will — the results have been remarkable but on occasions his acerbic tongue has proved his downfall when players start to tune him out.“Specialist in failure”Three words delivered in typically witheringly fashion by Mourinho struck at the heart of Wenger’s weakness in February 2014.Arsenal had gone eight years without a trophy under Wenger at the point, while Mourinho was back at Chelsea having hoovered up silverware across the world. In a pointed jibe at Mourinho, the Gunners chief claimed Premier League bosses were playing down their title chances because they “fear to fail”.Mourinho came back with all guns blazing, saying: “He is a specialist in failure, I’m not.“The reality is he’s a specialist because, eight years without a piece of silverware, that’s failure. If I did that in Chelsea I’d leave London and not come back.”Push comes to shoveFurious after Chelsea defender Gary Cahill’s ugly tackle on Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez in the first half of a spiteful London derby, Wenger came out of his technical area to remonstrate with referee Martin Atkinson.Mourinho didn’t miss the chance to have his say and Wenger responded with a shove in the chest of his rival, who stumbled before regaining his balance and pointing to tell the Frenchman to get back to the bench. The pair clashed again seconds later with the fourth official Jonathan Moss stepping in to separate them. With Chelsea winning the October 2014 meeting 2-0 to inflict the Gunners’ first league defeat of the season, it was no surprise there was no handshake between the bosses at full-time.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000The acrimony between Arsene Wenger (R) and Jose Mourinho (L) stretches back to the arrival of the Portuguese coach in England 13 years ago © AFP/File / Oli SCARFF, Adrian DENNISLONDON, United Kingdom, Dec 1 – When Arsenal face Manchester United in a crucial Premier League clash on Saturday, the antics of the two sworn enemies on the touchline will take up as much attention as the actual match. It was ever thus when Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and United manager Jose Mourinho lock horns.last_img read more

Latest: Chelsea 2 Crystal Palace 1 – Blues lead but visitors begin to threaten

first_imgGoals from Fernando Torres and Ramires left Chelsea edging towards a win that would take them to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal. The Blues, who face Arsenal a week on Monday, went ahead when Torres tucked away the rebound after Willian’s low shot had been tipped onto the post by Crystal Palace keeper Julian Speroni. And Branislav Ivanovic missed a great chance to double the lead when he fired wide after being put through by Juan Mata’s delightful back-heel.Chelsea seemed to be in control but switched off at the back and Marouane Chamakh equalised just before the half-hour mark, steering home from nine yards out after being found by Joel Ward’s ball in from the left. But Ramires struck five minutes later, collecting Eden Hazard’s pass and sending a 25-yard shot beyond the motionless Speroni into the corner of the net.Mata, back in the starting line-up along with Michael Essien, scuffed a shot wide following good work on the left by Willian early in the second half.At the other end, Cameron Jerome’s effort went wide before Petr Cech was twice called into action.Jason Puncheon’s drive forced a good save from the Chelsea keeper, who was also able to gather Damien Delaney’s close-range header.Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Azpilicueta; Essien, Ramires; Willian, Mata, Hazard, Torres.Subs: Schwarzer, Cole, Lampard, Oscar, Schurrle, Ba, Eto’o.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 Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast September 24, 2019

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Much nicer air in over the state again today, as our frontal complex exited yesterday. We now are settling into a drier pattern. There is plenty of moisture trying to move across the western, central and northern corn belt, but over the next 2 weeks, it seems to fall apart well before it gets here. An upper level high sitting over the SE should continue to steer this action by to our northwest. Here is our updated outlook this morning.Mostly sunny and pleasant today, Temps near normal, and low humidity. Tomorrow we see an increase in clouds, but no significant precipitation potential. That being said, with the increase in moisture in the atmospheric profile, we cant rule out a few sprinkles from US 30 northward…but those are not a big part of our outlook. We are back to partly-mostly sunny skies on Thursday and stay that way through the balance of the week.Over the weekend, we are largely dry over Ohio, but on Saturday we cant rule out scattered showers in the far NW and SE areas. We are talking a few hundredths to .3″ with only 20% coverage, and the rest of the state just sees a mix of clouds and sun. Partly sunny skies expected in all areas Sunday.Next week we are fully dry Monday through Friday. Temps will be cooler next week, after slowly building some later this week and over the weekend.10 day rain potentiallast_img read more

BJP State executive to meet in Pimpri

first_imgPune: The Bharatiya Janata Party will hold a two-day meet of the State executive at Pimpri on Wednesday. This will be the party’s second executive in Pimpri after more than three decades, the first being in the early 1980s.“The venue has been chosen as a symbolic marker of our triumph over the NCP, which had dominated the PCMC [Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation] for so long,” a BJP leader said. The saffron party won unprecedented landslides in polls to both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic bodies, bagging 98 out of 162 seats in the Pune Municipal Corporation and 77 out of 128 seats in the PCMC.The BJP’s top brass from Maharashtra, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the party’s State unit chief Raosaheb Danve are expected to be in attendance, along with Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Suresh Prabhu. The sessions will focus on policy-making in Maharashtra and the party’s plans after securing overwhelming victories in most of the civic bodies and local bodies across the State. There are speculations that Congress strongman Narayan Rane might formally enter the BJP’s fold during the meet. However, local party leaders refused to comment on the matter.BJP’s Pimpri-Chinchwad president Laxman Jagtap said the meet will be held at the Ramkrishna More auditorium, and will be attended by more than 500 party leaders. The party virtually had no presence in PCMC, be it the civic or Assembly level, until the 2014 Parliamentary polls. However, its fortunes changed when Mr. Jagtap, who was formerly the NCP’s vital point man in the area, joined the BJP in 2014. This paved the way for the entry of more NCP heavyweights, like Bhosari legislator Mahesh Landge and former PCMC mayor Azam Pansare, into the saffron party.Stormy protests are expected by the Opposition NCP and the Shiv Sena, the BJP’s disgruntled ally, during the meet. The Sena’s Maruti Bhapkar (a former Aam Aadmi Party leader) said a combined Opposition would stage a hunger strike to protest against the failure of the promises made the BJP-led Central and State governments on various issues.last_img read more
