Armyworms and cover crops

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest True armyworm (Pseudaletia unipuncta) overwinters in the southern U.S. and adult moths migrate northward in April and May.  Females lay eggs in grassy fields including rye cover crops, and the young caterpillars feed there, typically attacking corn from early may through June.  Corn planted into rye cover is at greater risk for early season armyworm feeding because the caterpillars may already be in the field and move to the corn after the rye is killed.  Armyworm can also move into corn from other fields such as wheat, in which case infestation usually occurs along field edges. Though some growers include an insecticide in their rye burndown herbicide, this prophylactic application is not recommended because in many years the armyworm populations will not be sufficient to warrant it or its cost.  Foliar insecticides work well as a rescue treatment and can be applied in years when scouting indicates it will help.  Corn fields planted into rye cover or into other no-till grassy habitats should be scouted beginning in early to mid May in southern Ohio and mid to late May moving further north.Armyworms take shelter during the day in corn whorls or under debris so it can be difficult to find them.  Their feeding damage is more obvious, with ragged edges that progress towards the midrib.  When 15 to 20% of the stand has feeding damage the field should be re-checked within a few days to determine if defoliation is increasing.  Rescue treatments in corn may be needed if stand infestation is greater than 50% and larvae are not yet mature. If defoliation remains less than 50% and the new growth shows minimal feeding injury, the stand will likely recover with minimal impact on yield.  Early scouting is important because the caterpillars are easier to kill when small, and also because larvae nearing maturity have already done most of their feeding.A number of labeled insecticides are available for armyworm (http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/ag/images/Corn_2013_ArW.pdf), and certain Bt trait packages are also labeled for true armyworm control (http://www.msuent.com/assets/pdf/28BtTraitTable2016.pdf).last_img read more

Warriors Take on WA State Championships

first_imgaustouch.com.au caught up with East Arnhem Land’s Cameron Adams, who has been responsible for getting the team together and getting them to the event. How long did it take you to get here and what did you have to do to get here?We had to travel from Ramingining to Darwin, which in the end ended up taking us 10 hours, because we had a few flat tyres and a few problems. The road was deemed impassable so we weren’t supposed to drive it, but we drove it. We passed most of the big rivers and we got to one big river before we hit the bitumen and I actually sunk my car in the river so it wasn’t very fun. Fortunately the car didn’t stop and the boys were able to push it out and we just opened the doors and flush the water out and keep driving. That was a bit of an adventure. We spent two nights in Darwin, and we just literally arrived off the plane and drove straight to the game (before their first game). A lot of them had never been on a big plane before and their plane landed and it didn’t land properly and so it took off again so that was another experience. It has been an adventure to get here but the boys were really excited and it’s going to be a great tournament. You had problems getting to the Northern Territory State Championships earlier this year as well, it was quite an effort to get there too wasn’t it?That was probably not as bad as this one, but that was pretty shocking as well, with all the roads and catching boats and crocodile infested waters. What made you want to come to the event? What was the background behind that?I’m from Perth and I’ve been out in Ramingining, East Arnhem Land, for 18 months now and I’ve played Touch here for a long time, represented Western Australia and the Barbarians and I just wanted to come down and bring the boys and give them a bit of exposure to what my life is like after sharing theirs and exposure to life outside Ramingining. Is this a similar team to the one that played at the NT State Championships? We’ve changed about four players. They’ve just improved but a lot of them had never played before May and this is the first time they’ve played. How good is it for them to get this exposure? It’s good, they love it, they are all smiling. They’re excited. When you moved to the Northern Territory, how did you get these players involved? It’s just in my nature to want to play Touch so I just got them together to give them an opportunity to play something other than AFL, that’s kind of like the only sport out there, so it was a chance to play something different. What was the reception like? Did you get people onboard straight away?As soon as you tell them that there was a possibility of going to Darwin, any opportunity to get to Darwin, they are up for it. They were pretty much committed from day one. The Western Australia trip, we got commitment three months ago and we’ve been training three nights a week since then. How good is it just to see them here? It’s amazing, it’s good for the competition, as you can see they’re having a few jokes and mucking around, and there are going to be a lot of teams that turn their heads and have a good look at them and that’s what it’s all about, encouraging more people to come. How exciting is it for you to come back and play at this event?I love it, especially playing my old club straight up, they are my very best friends, Tompkins Park, and to play them first, I spoke to one of my mates the other day and said that it couldn’t have happened any better. We are happy and as long as we keep improving, it doesn’t matter about winning it’s about getting better and maybe having the opportunity to come back next year. How proud of them are you?100 per cent, I love them, they’ve got an amazing sense of humour, they really have become my close mates and they all call me their family, I’ve actually been adopted by them, if you ask each and every one of them I’m related to them somehow. That’s what it’s all about, it’s just one big family. 10 months agoMan Utd boss Mourinho insists luck was with Liverpool

first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Man Utd boss Mourinho insists luck was with Liverpoolby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United boss Jose Mourinho insists luck was with Liverpool for Sunday’s 3-1 defeat.Sadio Mane had put the hosts ahead on 24 minutes, but a mistake from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker allowed Jesse Lingard to equalise soon after. However, further strikes followed for Jurgen Klopp’s men after the break, with substitute Xherdan Shaqiri netting two deflected efforts to seal the hosts’ 3-1 victory.Mourinho said, “They had a strong team and showed they are the strongest team. It’s hard to concede two goals in the moments we conceded and even harder the way the goals happened [with the deflections]. I think our difficult period in the game was the first 20 minutes when we couldn’t cope with their fantastic intensity and speed and pressing. After that we were quite calm in the game and the game was controlled. “We can say of course they attacked much more than us, they had corners, they had more play in our half than we had in their half, but it was exactly the moment when the game was going into the dynamic when they were really frustrated. “You had centre-backs coming with the ball and shooting from 30 yards into the stands – that was a period when the game was more under control and we felt that we could win, even a little bit undeservedly, but it was the moment when sometimes teams that are dominating a game can lose matches. But that was when we conceded two goals. David [De Gea] was saying in the dressing room afterwards that they [Shaqiri’s shots] would have been two easy balls for him, but because of the deflections he had no chance.”Mourinho insisted luck was with the hosts, “If you want to speak about fortune, then speak about their second and third goals. Our goal was a good move by the side, I think [Romelu] Lukaku got in the space behind the full-back with a good cross and then Jesse [Lingard] arrived in a dangerous position and the goalkeeper made, what I used to call, half of a mistake. To speak about luck and goals we have to speak about the second and third goals.” last_img read more

The Premier League collected a courageous away victory over Slovan Bratislava, winning the match 2-1.Andraz Sporar’s deflected shot opened the scoring for the hosts after 11 minutes. But two goals in five minutes in the second half from Roman Saiss and Raul Jimenez sealed a memorable victory for Wolves, with Diogo Jota’s late red-card the only blemish on the evening.Nuno told BT Sport: “It was tough like we knew it would be. First half was difficult, we didn’t perform very well, second half was much better. They had one shot on target and that’s something we’ve got to improve, we can’t concede this goal.”Adama [Traore] helped a lot with his width and helping to unbalance them. With one man less it was about defending, we were brave and we managed to take what we wanted from the game. The Wolves fans here can go home happy.”Our aim is to enjoy this competition. You have to remember where we came from. It’s about enjoying it and seeing what happens at the end of it.”The young people were shouting, I didn’t expect that from them. It was so noisy and it gave Slovan an advantage and really helped them. It was better having them in the ground though, it’s more enjoyable.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

City of Calgary to release details of arena offer

first_imgA peak behind the curtain. The City of Calgary is releasing the details of its proposal to the Calgary Flames on a new arena Friday morning, just days after the team said negotiations weren’t getting anywhere, adding it was no longer pursuing a new building. After the announcement, Mayor Naheed Nenshi confirmed the basic deal was one-third of the funding from the city, one-third from the team, and one-third from a ticket surcharge. But he also added there was a lot more to it than that, which presumably is the part which will be released Friday.Sportsnet 960 THE FAN morning show host Dean ‘Boomer’ Molberg said the reaction from listeners to everything that’s happened this week has been split right down the middle.“I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I don’t think anyone is really threatened that the Flames would ever leave. This is a very profitable market, it’s a hockey market, it’s Canada and teams have left before but they’re not leaving now so I don’t know that fans really feel that threatened,” he said. The city is prohibited from releasing details of the Flames’ offer because of a confidentiality agreement.Boomer doesn’t expect the team to respond to whatever the mayor releases, but he wouldn’t be surprised if they did.“I think that they’ve thrown it down, they said they’re done and until something changes they’ll probably take that tack that they’re done negotiating,” he said.Still, he’s interested to see which side fans will take once we get a closer look at the numbers, even if they are just from one side.last_img read more

Nationalism means respect for people Priyanka to BJP

first_imgAmethi/Rae Bareli: True nationalism means love of the people and for the country but the BJP mirrors neither love nor respect in anything it does, says Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.Stepping up her attack on the saffron party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to address real issues, Priyanka Gandhi said there will be consequences if the voice of the people is drowned by the voice of one leader. In an exclusive interview to PTI, the Congress leader also said there is growing “public anger and pain” for which the people of India will give a message to Modi on May 23 when the votes for the Lok Sabha polls will be counted. While Sonia Gandhi is the MP from Rae Bareli, Rahul Gandhi represents Amethi in the Lok Sabha. “Nationalism means solving the problems of the people of the country. The greatest patriotism of any politician, of any government, would be to be able to hear the people when they speak, would be to be democratic, to be able to strengthen the institutions that strengthen the public voice, not weaken it,” Priyanka Gandhi said. Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroadThe BJP has been building its campaign narrative around the issue of nationalism and national security and the party has been referring to the Balakot air strikes and the Modi government’s policy in tackling terror. Priyanka Gandhi, who has been vigorously campaigning in Rae Bareli and Ameth, said the Modi government’s policies have led to large scale public anger and pain among people. “I think the people will give the message to him (PM) because I think whereever I go, I see a lot of public anger, public pain, which has not been addressed,” the Congress general secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh said. “Any leader whether it is him (Modi) or anyone else, if public pain is not addressed, if the voice of the people is drowned by the voice of one leader or by the kind of ideology they have, they will have to suffer the consequences. So I think the people are very clear,” she said. PTIlast_img read more
