SA’s ninth botanical garden

first_img28 September 2007South Africa’s ninth national botanical garden, the Nieuwoudtville National Botanical Garden, has been officially unveiled in the Northern Cape, where it will serve as a centre for biodiversity research in the world-renowned Bokkeveld Plateau.Speaking at the unveiling in August, Environmental Affairs Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said the SA National Biodiversity Institute would use the garden “to promote nature-based tourism, the conservation of the area’s unique biodiversity, environmental education opportunities and long-term ecological research in this botanical hotspot of global significance.”Located on the farm Glenlyon, the garden covers over 6 300 hectares of land on the Bokkeveld Plateau, which is famous for its range and density of bulbous plants, to the extent that Nieuwoudtville is often referred to as the “bulb capital of the world”.Some 40% of the local flora consists of bulbs that create spectacular displays every autumn and spring. The garden also incorporates large natural patches of renosterveld fynbos and succulent karoo vegetation.Almost a third of the species endemic to the Bokkeveld Plateau are threatened with extinction. The purchase of the farm Glenlyon was made possible by funding from the SA government, Conservation International through the Global Conservation Fund, and the Leslie Hill Succulent Karoo Trust through the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF South Africa).South Africa’s first national botanical garden, Kirstenbosch, was established in 1913; its eighth, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort/Mogale City, Gauteng province, was established in 1982.National botanical gardens have been defined internationally as institutions holding documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education. The Nieuwoudtville National Botanical Garden will open to the public from January 2008.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Beermen coach Leo Austria rues missed free throws in Game 3 loss

first_imgSan Miguel also missed 17 out of their 39 free throws attempts, including five in the fourth quarter. The Beermen also could not find the range hitting just 10-of-47 from deep for 23 percent which was a far cry from their 40% conversion during the eliminations.“You have to give credit to them, they really wanted to win,” said Austria of the Fuel Masters. “We missed a lot of free throws, we missed a lot of three-pointers, and we gave up a lot of rebounds.”Despite all of those, San Miguel came just a Chris Ross 3-pointer away from stealing Game 4. Ross misfired on a potential game-wining triple as time was running out.“Next time, we’ll have to stick to what our game plan is because we played their game tonight. We’re not able to make those shots that should be winning shots. Spotify Captures Half Of British Teens Streaming Hours

first_img Email Spotify Captures Half Of British Teens’ Streaming Hours U.K. Teens Prefer Streaming Over Radio spotify-captures-half-british-teens-streaming-hours Research reveals young U.K. music listeners rely on playlists, Spotify and YouTube more than radioPhilip MerrillGRAMMYs Sep 6, 2017 – 4:50 pm Research firm AudienceNet revealed fascinating findings from a June 2017 survey of music consumption in the U.K., showing radio still has a place in young people’s lives but streaming playlists, Spotify and YouTube have replaced passive listening with an on-demand culture giving listeners the power to navigate. The “Audiomonitor” survey shows the 16–24 age group has diverged from the UK’s national average, signaling a new stage as streaming services become dominant with youth. This divergence towards on-demand listening is strongest among 16–19 year-olds.Albums versus playlists: Brits over 65 spend 41 percent of their time listening to albums, but time spent listening tilts in favor of playlists among 16–24 year-olds. The 16–19 segment spent only 20 percent of their time on albums and 35 percent of their time listening to playlists.Radio: The average British listener spends 43 percent of their time listening to radio and three-quarters of 16–24 year-olds listen to some radio each week. But among 16–19 year-olds radio listening has dropped down to just 10 percent of their time.Streaming: While only 24 percent of UK listeners use streaming, in general, this rate rises to 62 percent among the 16–19 age group.YouTube versus Spotify: YouTube has a 31 percent weekly reach on average, almost double Spotify’s 16 percent. But among the streaming hours of the 16–19 demographic, Spotify dominates with 51 percent of their streaming time while YouTube accounts for 33 percent. AudienceNet estimates that Spotify accounts for a total of 30 percent of 16–19 year-olds’ listening hours.More changes are inevitable as streaming audiences supply real-time data detailing their listening habits to music services, artists, and across social media.Spotify For Artists Promises Closer Connection To Fan BasesRead more Twitter News Facebook last_img read more

WATCH German Police Clash With Protesters Before G20 Summit

The skirmishes came hours before the two-day gathering of the world’s top economic powers gets under way Friday morning in Germany’s second-biggest city. Its host, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said she hoped the leaders would be able to find “compromises and answers” on a wide range of issues — although the prospects of finding common ground on climate change and trade were uncertain. Thursday evening’s protest as the G-20 leaders arrived in Hamburg was titled “G-20: Welcome to Hell,” and a standoff between hardcore anti-capitalist protesters and police developed before the march itself really got going. Police said they repeatedly asked some demonstrators to remove their masks, to no avail. They then decided to separate the group from the rest of the march, which they estimated at 12,000 people in total. Black-hooded protesters attacked a police vehicle with bottles and bricks, breaking its window. Organizers quickly called an end to the march after the violence broke out, police said. Skirmishes continued, with police advancing down the street with two water cannons while being pelted with bottles by a group of black-clad people. A nearby building was plastered with the slogan “Borderless solidarity instead of nationalism: attack the G-20.” A small group on the roof set off fireworks. Police said windows at a furniture store and a bank were damaged. There was no immediate word on a number of arrests or injuries. Many other groups are calling for peaceful protests and are pushing the G-20 leaders for action to fight climate change and address economic disparities in the world. Some are even calling for the dissolution of the G-20 itself so the United Nations becomes the platform for such discussions. In all, more than 100,000 protesters are expected in Hamburg for the summit, with some 8,000 considered part of Europe’s violent left-wing scene, according to police. The northern port city has boosted its police with reinforcements from around the country and has 20,000 officers on hand to patrol Hamburg’s streets, skies and waterways. Merkel is also hoping to keep things under control inside the city congress center where the summit is being held. With guests including U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the search for compromises is expected to be challenging. Merkel said leaders would address regulating financial markets, fighting terrorism and pandemics and combatting climate change, among other issues. She said “free, rule-based and fair trade” will be an important issue. “You can imagine that there will be discussions that will not be easy,” she said. “Globalization can be a win-win situation. It must not always be that there are winners and losers.” In the wake of Trump’s recent decision to pull out of the Paris deal fighting climate change, the battle against global warming promises to feature prominently in discussions at the summit. Merkel has rejected calls from some to push for a strong “G-19” statement — without the U.S. — on climate change. That is something that Zhu Guangyao, a Chinese deputy finance minister, told reporters Thursday that Beijing also did not support. “The policies produced by the G-20 should be by the consensus of all member states,” he said. “No one should be excluded.” Still, he added, “China will firmly promote its policies taking more measures against climate change.” _____ Geir Moulson contributed to this report.last_img read more

Russia Explosion Injures 10 At St Petersburg Supermarket

first_imgBREAKING VIDEO – JUST NOW: Multiple people injured after an explosion at large mall in St. Petersburg, Russia. pic.twitter.com/7lBFAjYQjN— The Anon Journal (@TheAnonJournal) December 27, 2017 Share Russian officials say at least 10 people have been injured by an explosion at a supermarket in St. Petersburg. At least 10 people were injured Wednesday by an explosion at a supermarket in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city and the site of a deadly subway bombing this year. The Investigative Committee, the nation’s top investigative agency, said a device containing 200 grams (7 ounces) of explosives went off at a storage area for customers’ bags. It said the device was rigged with shrapnel to cause more damage. No one has claimed responsibility for the explosion at a branch of the Perekrestok supermarket chain in the city’s northwest Kalininsky district.Alexander Klaus, the chief of the local branch of the Investigative Committee, said 10 people were hospitalized with injuries.Andrey Kibitov, a spokesman for St. Petersburg’s governor, tweeted that the injured were in satisfactory condition and one had been discharged from the hospital.A criminal investigation was launched. While officials stopped short of branding the explosion as a terror attack, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee that oversees anti-terror efforts in Russia said it was coordinating the search for suspects.Viktoria Gordeyeva, a St. Petersburg resident who walked past the supermarket shortly after the explosion, said people were afraid to enter other stores in the area.“There was no panic, but people were reluctant to enter a nearby drug store and a grocery store,” Gordeyeva said.Another local resident, Marina Bulanova, a doctor, heard the explosion and rushed to the market to help treat anyone who might be hurt. She said ambulance crews already had taken those injured to city hospitals by the time she got there.Russian President Vladimir Putin telephoned U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this month to thank him for a CIA tip that helped thwart a series of bombings in St. Petersburg, Putin’s home town. The Federal Security Service, or FSB, said seven suspects linked to the Islamic State group were arrested in connection to the alleged plot. The Kremlin said the arrested suspects had planned to bomb St. Petersburg’s Kazan Cathedral and other crowded sites. In April, a suicide bombing in the St. Petersburg’s subway left 16 people dead and wounded more than 50. Russian authorities identified the bomber who blew himself up on a subway line as Akbardzhon Dzhalilov, a 22-year old Kyrgyz-born Russian national.BREAKING: At least 10 people have been injured in an explosion at a shop located in a Shopping mall in St Petersburg, Russia, initial reports indicate the explosion was in a storage room pic.twitter.com/0OXn4oO4Kh— News_Executive (@News_Executive) December 27, 2017last_img read more

Texas Currently Has 10 Cases Of Measles Surpassing 2018 Numbers

first_imgThe Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is reporting ten cases of measles as of Wednesday, surpassing the total number in all of 2018 when the state registered nine cases. In 2017, Texas only had one case of measles. The 10th case is an adult traveler visiting Guadalupe County from the Philippines, where there is an ongoing measles outbreak. Harris County has the most cases in the state, with four reported by health officials. The other counties with confirmed cases are: Bell, Denton, Galveston, Guadalupe, Jefferson and Montgomery.Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)DSHS has issued a health alert reminding health care providers to consider measles in diagnoses and immediately report suspected cases to public health authorities. The alert also provides advice to medical providers about limiting the spread of measles in a health care setting and options for preventing illness for susceptible people who have been exposed.Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness transmitted when an infected person coughs or sneezes virus particles into the air.The best way to prevent getting sick is to be immunized with two doses of the measles vaccine. DSHS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend children receive one dose at 12 to 15 months of age and another at 4 to 6 years.A large study by the Annals of Internal Medicine released on Monday provided strong new evidence that the childhood vaccine for measles is safe, and does not increase the risk for autism in children.  Sharelast_img read more
